It's closer than you might think. A bit of history on Desktops and Laptops might provide some interesting insight: At one time (late 1990's and early 2000's),  AMD desktops were generally considered over-heated, power hungry machines with processors that were inferior performance-wise to Intel. AMD quickly began focusing on more than just the clock speed of their chips. While Intel was busy making faster processors, AMD was busy doing things to make them more efficient. For a short while, AMD surprassed Intel in performance. Intel was at work making battery efficient mobile machines as their tradename Mobile Centrino took center stage in mobile computing. Unfortunately, Intel lagged behind AMD in their desktop processors until around 2006 when the Core Duo processor was invented. Just months later, Intel pushed energy efficiency, low-heat and performance even further with the Core-2 Technology which offered 40% better battery power. Thanks to the Core-2 technology, Intel is still probably the leader in Mobile Computing and Battery life.
